Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine

The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine (Mexico), Caribbean medical school was established in 1935. The university is a standalone private institution and is Mexico’s largest private and oldest university, with accreditation from the Mexican Federal Secretary of Public Education.

In addition to students from Mexico and other countries in Latin America, the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine, Caribbean medical school trains students from a number of countries around the world. Individuals are trained in different types of medical sciences made available through various undergraduate, masters, doctoral and specialization programmers. In all, the university, Caribbean medical school offers about 29 specialization programmes, 22 master programmes, 2 doctoral degree programmes and 42 undergraduate programmes, all offered in a variety of semiprofessional, degree and specialization courses. The university is equipped with 2 teaching hospitals, 3 convention centers, sports facilities, 1 dental clinic and rooms. The university also conducts a community medicine programme, known as ‘Medicine in the Community Program’ and publishes its own newspaper called the Ocho Columnas.

The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine, Caribbean medical school also comprises a full range of faculties and schools which offer degree and training programmes in Education, Fine Arts, Linguistics, Nursing, Dentistry, Biological Sciences, industrial Design, Medicine, Psychology, Architecture, Law, Accounting, Communication, Agriculture, Business Administration and Engineering. Students graduating from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine, Caribbean medical school are able to seamlessly transfer to or continue into programmes in many universities with which the university has established affiliations. The extent of the university, Caribbean medical school, expands over the three secondary schools, elementary schools, junior secondary, continuing education programmes and a community college that the university owns and administers. The Community College established by the University Autonoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine, Caribbean medical school is the first founded in Mexico, and as such is a long standing and reputable institution.

The medical programme at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Caribbean medical school has a duration of five years, divided into four years of basic sciences, laboratory work and intensive clinical education, and successful students of the first four years and Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination, move on to the last year during which they undergo an intensive internship programme. This internship can be done in Mexico or with any US or Puerto Rican hospital that the university is affiliated with. At the end of the fifth year, students must sit Step II of the US licensing examination to gain approval for rotary internship. Students having sat the Professional Examination (which is equivalent to Step1 and Step II exams as an alternative to these two exams)and have succeeded acquire a medical Degree of Physician-Surgeon). The same is awarded to other students who would were successful in the Step I and Step II examinations and passed on to the final exam, the professional examination. It must be noted that Step I and Step II US licensing examinations are sat by students from the US or those with interests in furthering medical studies or working in the US. Mexican students may opt to go directly to the Professional Examination. US students who would have passed the licensing exams are now capable of undergoing postgraduate residency training programmes in the US.
