American International School of Medicine

Prospective students of American International School of Medicine are required to hold a first degree (Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent) from any university in the U.S, United Kingdom or Canada or from any internationally accepted university of institution of higher education.

This Caribbean medicinal school is based in Guyana and operates under a charter conferred by the Government of Guyana to the American International School of Medicine. This university offers students the opportunity to travel and study abroad within a system and institution that is home grown and familiar. Living in Guyana, however, is in many ways different to living in the U.S. or Europe and so allows students to experience a new lifestyle and culture. Traveling to neighboring Spanish speaking countries throughout South and Central America and even the English speaking Caribbean islands of the West indies open doors to lots of un experiences whilst studying in the region not too far away from home in the United States.

Prospective students of the American International School of Medicine are required to have completed premed programmed in English (1 year), general zoology or biology (w/lab)(1 year), college level mathematics and or statistics (1 year), general physics (w/lab) 91 year) and organic chemistry (w/lab) (1 year. Students from Caricom countries are required to have completed at least two A Level science subjects, and must have passes in both mathematics and English at Ordinary Level in order to be admitted at American International School of Medicine.

The study programme offered at American International School of Medicine has a duration of four years, and includes two years study of basic sciences and two years clinical medicine. The curriculum of American International School of Medicine is based on the American system and MD programmes cannot be completed in less than 40 months, this period of time being the minimum amount of time for completing the programme. Taking summer semester breaks into consideration, MD studies at American International School of Medicine can be completed within 48 months. In addition to clinical science and basic science, electives are provided in dermatology, endocrinology, urology, rheumatology, neurology, infectious diseases, ENT, cardiology, anesthesiology, sports medicine, family medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pulmonary medicine, radiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, vascular surgery and tropical medicine.

American International School of Medicine makes both on-campus and off-campus living possible, as students who do not reside on-campus are able to rent private houses and apartments in towns that are near the school. Some of these areas include Lodge, Georgetown, Kitty, Campbellsville, Greater Georgetown, Turkeyen and Queenstown. The average rent for houses in Guyana is about USD550, ranging from $400 to $1000 depending on the community, type of accommodation and utilities. Rent fees can be further reduced by sharing an apartment with a friend or fellow school mate.

Graduated students of American International School of Medicine are able to sit licensing exams in any country belonging to the United Nations due to the fact that the university is on the World Health Organization’s World Directory of Medical schools. As such, many students of the university have sat the PLAB in Great Britain and USMLE in the United States and have been successful. The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates has also given approval to the American International School of Medicine for students to sit licensing examinations in any US state.
